How to make your freezer energy efficient

Domestic freezers are notorious for the amount of energy they consume. If you are looking for ways of protecting the investment you made in the purchase of your freezer, there are two important ways of going about it:

Warranty insurance

  • one of the ways of protecting your investment, not only in the appliance itself, but also your expenditure on all the food you are storing in it, is to buy effective warranty insurance;

  • this kind of freezer insurance – provided by KAPUT Insurance – makes certain that any breakdown or repair is attended to rapidly, within your own home, by a fully trained and qualified engineer;

  • not only does this extend the useful working life of your freezer but helps to ensure that there is the minimum of loss to the food you store within it;

  • include your freezer within a collection of up to nine other domestic appliances and you stand to enjoy attractive discounts on the warranty insurance of each item;

  • provided you remain within your claims limit, you may make any number of call outs during the course of the year – with no call out fee, no labour or replacement parts charges, and not even any excess to pay on your insurance claim;

Energy efficiency

  • the second way of managing the costs of running a freezer are designed to make it run more efficiently – by consuming less energy;

  • think about its positioning, for example, and if possible, keep it out of the direct sunlight and in a cooler ambience;

  • positioning also needs to keep the freezer at least 10 cm away from any wall against which it is placed – this breathing space is needed for it to work efficiently;

  • remember to keep the freezer full – plastic containers of water, or even scrunched up newspapers are better than leaving the space empty and the appliance working harder just to cool the air;

  • wait until hot food has cooled down first before storing it in your freezer – you are wasting energy by cooling hot food, which may be left to cool on its own before you put it away;

  • keeping your freezer running at a constant temperature (the recommended level is -18 °C) is more efficient than any variable temperature – the constant temperature is makes for better storage of your food and cheaper energy bills;

  • the seals to the door or lid of your freezer also play an important part in keeping it working properly and in making the most efficient use of the energy it consumes – make sure they are doing their job properly and keep the surface contact clean to help to achieve this;

  • don’t allow ice within your freezer to build up, since this reduced the efficiency with which it is working – and therefore the energy it consumes.

The combination of the protection of warranty insurance and some simple precautions as to where you site and how you use your freezer, might help you achieve significant savings.
